Kids and volunteers in the Grandfathers for Golf organization have a new name.

The name was coined by organization president Tony Viola in honor of 27-year-old Brendan Steele, the pro golfer from Idyllwild who was a star competitor at Hemet High and UC Riverside. He presently is swinging on the Nationwide Tour, which is the professional tournament series one step away from the big-time PGA events.

Story continues below

2009 / Special to The Press-Enterprise
Brendan Steele, of Idyllwild, reads the green at last year's Soboba Classic at the Country Club at Soboba Springs.
His $36,908 in winnings this year ranks 68th on the Nationwide money-winning list going into this week's Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic in Ontario, Canada. He made the tourney's cut Friday with competition continuing today and Sunday.

He definitely will have a big gallery on hand when at the Soboba Golf Classic, which begins Sept. 30 at the Country Club at Soboba Springs. The Grandfathers printed 200 Steelehead shirts that will be handed to kids participating in a junior golf clinic that will be led by Nationwide pros, hopefully including Steele, on Sept. 28.

Grandfathers for Golf is a volunteer organization that introduces kids to the sport by giving them clubs and a series of lessons. Participants proudly call themselves Steeleheads for good reason.

Steele serves on the organization's board of directors and conducts clinics for the kids when he's not on the Nationwide Tour, which is a season-long qualifying series for the PGA Tour.

As a kid, he and his father, Kent Steele, donated his clubs to the Grandfathers program as he grew out of them.

Viola said that kids and the volunteers who teach eagerly follow Steele's progress on the Internet and television. They cheer his success. They make use of his trying rounds as examples for the kids. "Kids learn that you have to contain yourself and if you have a bad day, you have to let it go," he said.

Viola, ever The Steelehead, is certain that Steele has lots of good days ahead of him and will play his way onto the PGA Tour.

It will be fun to watch The Steelheads cheer on their buddy from in the gallery at the Soboba Classic.

GfG Board member and PGA Nationwide Tour Player Brendan Steele has done it again.  After a brilliant 66 on Saturday at the "Mexico Open Bicentenary" he has moved up the scoreboard 41 spots. Just 5 strokes behind the leader.

All of us Brendan Steele fans here at GfG along with all of you will from this point forward will be known as the :  "STEELEHEADS".  You can follow Brendan in real time on-line at

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Golf is a perfect activity for youth of all ages. It provides whole-body exercise and muscle development, it promotes a spirit of friendly competition, and the sport relies on total honesty and courtesy. Overall, golf is an environment in which young players develop values that will lead to an outstanding adulthood. Grandfathers For Golf (GFG) works to develop strategic programs that introduce juniors to the game. These programs provide the young participants with the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment on the links, and the industry benefits by ensuring that the next generation will continue to expand upon the golf traditions of the past. Careful research has revealed that junior golf programs have a remarkable rate of success in terms of generating adult players. Only 30 percent of young people who are introduced to the game outside of a structured program continue playing in adulthood. But 60 percent of participants in a structured program will become active adult players.
GFG offers 2 levels of instruction:
GFG School is for beginners

Youth on Course is for players who have completed GFG School and/or can demonstrate a skill level to play on the course independently.
